Puppy Pre-School

Start you new puppy off on the right paw with “Puppy Pre-School” at A-1 K-9!

“Puppy Pre-school” has been growing since 2012 and continues to grow in popularity. Our goal is to get your puppy started off on the right paw from the very beginning. Puppy training can be one of the most difficult tasks facing new puppy owners. We want to help take some of the stress off bringing your new addition home to your family.

Our puppy training is not a “one size fits all” concept. Although we have a basic foundation we build upon, every puppy is different and we figure out those differences and get your puppy moving in the right direction.

When to Start

The best scenario for “Puppy Pre-school” is to get your puppy between 8-11 weeks of age. We want to start your puppy off as soon as it is removed from their litter mates. The sooner we get your puppy after being taken for the litter mates, the more successful the training will be.

                                                                      Potty Training

Young puppies are not ready and do not understand the concept of not creating potty messes in the home. We walk your puppies and get them in a routine that is predictable so we can help avoid these accidents in their living environment.

                Crate Training

We crate train your puppy and teach them that their crate is not a bad place to be. We teach them to rest quietly in their crates and use their crates for those times they need to take a break and rest as they are growing.

                                                                         Socialization

We socialize your puppies with other puppies, cats, dogs, and people. Your puppy spends the majority of their day playing or sleeping in our grooming shop while many other activities are happening throughout the day. The puppies are continually supervised while they are allowed to begin experiencing the world and all the different sights, sounds, and smells that are going to start being part of their lives. They become accustomed to a grooming environment and being groomed while they are here with us.

            Undesirable Behaviors

While your puppy is with us, we work on stopping undesirable behaviors such as jumping up, chewing on things not for a puppy, play biting, and other nuisance behaviors. We work on good behaviors like listening, sitting, name identification, and proper play.

                                                                            Length of Pre-School

The “Puppy Pre-school” length is really your decision. We do not recommend any less than 3 weeks. We can work with your puppy for as long as you would like us to work with them and the longer they are with us, the more they will learn while they are here. We treat your puppy as if it were our very own puppy. We continue to teach and work with your puppy as it grows and matures in the puppy stage.

   After Pre-School.. What’s Next

At the end of “Puppy Pre-school” we have a training session with you and your puppy. We work with you to explain your puppy’s habits and how to continue the work we have started. During the training session, the transition from our care to you becomes apparent to your puppy. They start to see you as someone to be in their lives and recognize you as a their new “best friend”. There are two highly recommended options for transfer of your puppy from our care. We highly recommend you come to our facility for the training session OR we will bring your puppy to you. We find that both of these methods are highly effective and efficient in making the transition.
